My current research is in a variety of areas, including experimental/behavioral economics, statistical discrimination, personnel/labor economics, public goods and social dilemmas. He also has maintained a long-term research program on the effects of sleep (in particular, insufficient sleep) on decision-making. Some of this work has been published in Nature Human Behaviour, European Economic Review, Games and Economic Behavior, Journal of Labor Economics, Experimental Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics, Theory and Decision, Sleep, and the Journal of Sleep Research, to name a few. Over the years, my research has been supported through past or current funding (on which I was PI or co-PI) from 5 separate National Science Foundation grants, a USDA National Research Initiative grant, and an Office of Naval Research Global grant (see below).
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the specific studies I am currently conducting. My working papers are generally available on the ASU department working paper page or from RePEc, and I ask that you do not quote from any of my working papers unless you have requested permission to do so first. For published papers, please see my vita link above.
My Google Scholar Profile (view papers and citation information)
I am also affliliated with IZA (The Institute of Labor Economics) in Bonn, Germany, as a Research Fellow (here's my IZA profile page), with CERPA (the Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis) at Appalachian State University as a Research Fellow, and with the Economic Science Institute (ESI) at Chapman University as a Research Affiliate.

FEDERALLY FUNDED RESEARCH (as PI or co-PI)
Current Funding:
*2020-2024 (PI): National Science Foundation, SES #2018001: $406,628. With Naomi Kakoschke (co-PI) and Sean Drummond (co-PI) to study the decision foundations of eating behaviors when sleep restricted.
Previous Awards:
*2017-2021 (PI): National Science Foundation, SES-1734137: $399,038. With Dave Bruner and Dave McEvoy to study how sleep restriction impacts strategic decisions.
*2017-2021 (co-PI): Office of Naval Research Global. $450,000. With Sean Drummond (PI) Clare Anderson (co-PI) and Shantha Rajaratnam (co-PI). Will study sleep restriction and circadian misalignment impacts on decision making.
*2012-2016 (PI): National Science Foundation, BCS-1229067: $405,628. With Todd McElroy to study how sleep restriction and circadian timing affect decision processes.
*2008-2011 (co-PI): National Science Foundation, SES #0727794: $750,000 collaborative proposal with UC-San Diego, ASU, and US Air Force Academy to study effects of sleep deprivation on decision making under uncertainty ($69,000 of grant directly to ASU).
*2003-2004 (PI): National Science Foundation, SES #0316414: with Lynn Hunnicutt: $44,000 to study the role of nonbinding suggestions on dispute resolution (using experiments)
*2002 (PI): National Science Foundation, SES # 0133231: $56,000 for research on the role of expectations in dispute rates using experimental economics.
*2001-2003 (co-PI): USDA National Research Initiative grant, with DeeVon Bailey. $160,000 for experimental work on valuing food traceability
